Loyal to Lola’s for years, loved ordering their victoria sponges for various birthday celebrations. I had ordered the original victoria sponge in early January 2026 for a May birthday, and received the new naked victoria sponge cake presumably following a recipe change? Sadly this new version is not to my taste at all. The thing is doused in cream on the top and sides (can’t stand cream), making the cake far messier to eat. It now has three thinner layers of sponge cake (instead of the original two) with huge globs of cream between layers, which drowns out the sponge. Jam is virtually non-existent so the flavour profile felt one-sided. The new addition of chocolate flakes on top is not needed (unfortunately for me, I also don’t like chocolate). I think the name should be changed to naked vanilla cake as it no longer resembles a victoria sponge at all. I ordered your original victoria sponge as it wasn’t heavy-laden with cream and didn’t contain chocolate. Why was the recipe changed? Will the original non-vegan victoria sponge return to the menu?The phrase, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind. Lola’s, I do enjoy the quality of your products as they are very good. However, based on the (in my opinion, detrimental) changes to the victoria sponge recipe, I won’t be ordering your cakes anymore. Positives:- Good text/email updates- Click and collect locker service is seamless- The cake itself (after cream scraped off) was lovely and soft, just needed more jam for that sweet tartness

We always buy our children’s celebration cakes from Lola’s. They are always utterly delicious and look incredible. They are reasonably priced for what you get and it’s so easy to order and collect. 100% recommend
